New York is the one place on earth that the largest number of cultures are meeting, fusing and mingling producing different culture that is should not really called a melting pot; it resemble more a tossed salad. Something that looks nice together, taste great but you can still occaasionally get a tatse of the individual ingredients. And this makes New York City a great culinary destination. You can get everything your heart desires, from the typical Italian to the Ethiopian, Nepalese, Greek. But if there are the two more dominant culinary cultures are the Italian and the Jewish. And there are many different Jewish little jewels but there is one that is interesting because of what it is offering specialized in sturgeon. And so it is the sturgeon king of New York, NY.
That was the choice of Asako, my dearest friend in NYC when I went to visit her, and her husband. We were roaming around the city with her holding and advising her little japanese book. After advising the book we went to Barney’s from Brunch. The day was busy and the que line was till the next block. Lot’s of time to spare. You know that a place is great if the line is long and quite, meaning that all the people there thing that the food worths the wait.
The time finally arrived and we were in. We were in the busiest little location in whole NYC. The place was packed with people and things on the wall, the shelfs and the benches… and the boxes all the way to the celling. But this is the sign og a restaurant thathas been around for long long time. The service is quick a snappy, no fuzzing around. There are people waiting rushing in and out… It was a chaotinc mess, but a mess that has a harmony. It has a strucutre. That is what you excpect from people that have been in the buisness for so long. Enter the dining room and notice that it is, indeed, a dining ROOM. There are fake frescoes on the walls, chipped plates, and mismatched silverware. I would argue that this adds to the charm of the place so don’t get on my back.
TheAnd the food? Oh my the food. It was the most expensive bagel I ever had, but it has sturgeon all the way. Nothing else… well cream cheese and a tomato slice, but that ‘s pretty much all. And a pickle. Where would a deli be without a pickle. And there are variations with more less or the addition of salmon. But why having salmon in sturgeon place.
To be honest I have to say the down side. The Service and the prices. To people who are not used to waiters with attitude the service sucks, but for me the service, being greek was fine. So what if they are rude, be rude yourself. This is new York. Also the prices where kinda high, but for the best bagel ever, I think it worths every penny.
